A Comprehensive Cost of Living Guide for Expats in Ecuador, 2025: Exploring Cities and Lifestyle Choices

Ecuador is a vibrant country that offers a unique blend of culture, nature, and affordability, making it an attractive destination for expats. Whether you're considering a move for retirement, remote work, or simply a change of scenery, understanding the cost of living in various cities is crucial. In this guide, we’ll explore the estimated cost of living in Ecuador for 2026, focusing on cities like Quito, Cuenca, Cotacachi, Otavalo, Banos, Mindo, Manta, Olon, Salinas, Guayaquil, Vilcabamba, Loja, Riobamba, and Ibarra. We’ll cover essential topics such as housing, food, utilities, healthcare, transportation, and recreational spending, along with activities and volunteer opportunities in each location.

Housing Costs

When moving to Ecuador, housing is often the most significant expense. The cost of rent or purchasing property varies widely depending on the city and neighborhood. When looking at rental properties, it is important to note whether the property is furnished or unfurnished. Unfurnished apartments do not usually include kitchen appliances or a washer and dryer. You will be required to purchase a range or cooktop and wall oven, refrigerator, washer and dryer in addition to all other furnishings for the property.

If you find a place you really love and plan to stay for an extended period of time (2-5 years), the difference in price for an unfurnished property might be worth the higher up-front cost of purchasing the major appliances and furnishings.

Food Costs

Food is another essential aspect of the cost of living in Ecuador. Eating out and grocery prices can vary significantly from city to city and person to person. However, if you choose to shop at local tiendas and mercados, you can significantly reduce the cost of buying food for cooking at home. Supermarket prices can be 10-25% higher for the same goods, but they will also carry some imported items you might not be able to find at a local tienda or mercado. Just be prepared to pay a premium price for those imported goods.

Eating out in any city with an expat population will still be very affordable. Typical desayunos (breakfasts) or almuerzos (lunches) will run anywhere from $2.50-5.00 depending on the restaurant. Dinners out can range anywhere from $5-25 a plate. This will depend on the style of restaurant (locals spot vs. expat spot) and type of food they serve.

Utilities

Utilities in Ecuador are generally affordable, but costs can vary based on location and usage. In many locations, utilities will include services such as water, propane, electricity, internet, and basic cell phone plan. Additionally, most places in Ecuador require you to purchase drinking water, as the tap water is not considered safe for consumption. The only city in Ecuador with safe tap water for drinking is Cuenca, which has it's own water treatment plant. And, even in Cuenca, it is recommended you wait a few months before drinking the tap water so your body has time to adjust to the different micro biome here in Ecuador. If you find you experience an upset stomach, try drinking bottled water and see if the issue subsides.

Healthcare Costs

Healthcare in Ecuador is generally affordable and of good quality, making it an attractive option for expats. Many doctors are bilingual, making communication easy for expats. The larger cities all have hospitals and clinics, some of which treat people on the Public Health Care System (IESS) while others accept patients with Private Health Care. Smaller towns will have health clinics, but for more serious ailments, a trip to a larger city may be required to receive the necessary care. Dental and Vision are not covered under health care plans, but affordable clinics are plentiful throughout the country.

Many expats choose to invest in private health care because it is so much more affordable than in places like the US. On average, you can expect to pay 60-75% less than a private health care plan in the US. It is also important to know that most private insurance plans do not cover pre-existing conditions. You will need to be covered by insurance for two full years before any pre-existing conditions will be covered by private insurance. Therefore, it is important to research what out-of-pocket costs may be for any pre-existing conditions should you need to seek care before your two year waiting period is up.

Doing your own research to choose a private health care provider can be daunting, so we suggest contacting an insurance broker to help you find coverage that suits your needs and price point.

Transportation Costs

Transportation costs in Ecuador will vary based on the city and mode of travel. Larger cities will have reliable public transportation options like buses and taxis. Smaller towns may only have taxis or interstate buses that will take you between towns. The cost for public transportation is very affordable, with bus rides costing as little as $.15 for seniors and $.30 per ride for those under 65. Taxis are also very affordable, with a typical ride in town costing between $2.00-$5.00.

In larger cities, you can make use of phone apps to check bus routes and find the closest bus stop, or to arrange for a taxi driver to come an pick you up. In Cuenca, a third option for public transportations is the Tranvía, which travels by rail. The Tranvía is particularly convenient if you want to travel around in the historic district, or to places like the Feria Libre. For those who are living in Ecuador on a permanent or semi-permanent basis, it is recommended you invest in a bus/tram pass so you can easily use the public transportation methods if you choose. The pass is rechargeable, so you can add money to your pass at many tiendas. This makes it very convenient to use the public transportation methods and save money getting around.

If you live in a smaller town, it is recommended you find a trusted driver and keep their contact information so you can always call for a taxi when needed.

Interstate buses are another common mode of transportation in Ecuador. In bigger cities, you will find bus depots with interstate buses to take you throughout the country. Prices range from $10-$30 per person, depending on where you are trying to go. Smaller towns may have a bus stop where you can flag down an interstate bus. You will need to have cash in order to pay for your ticket when you board the bus. Bus travel is considered to be safe and comfortable, but you will need to use your best travel practices in order to prevent any mishaps with your luggage. Daytime travel is also recommended as the roads at night can be foggy and dangerous, increasing the chances for an accident.

If you are living in the country or like to explore on your own, you might consider purchasing a car. This will increase your independence and give you the freedom to travel on your own schedule. There are many used cars available for purchase in Ecuador, giving you the chance to find one that fits your needs and budget.

Recreational/Discretionary Spending

Ecuador offers a wide range of recreational activities, from outdoor adventures to cultural experiences. In many places, you can enjoy live music, theatrical performances, museums, public parks, walking or hiking trails, indigenous markets, and of course one of the many cultural festivals that take place in Ecuador throughout the year. You will find most activities will be free or very low cost ($1.00-5.00 a person).

Each location will also have ample opportunities to volunteer your time in the community. There are charity organizations that help local residents with food, clothing, medical costs, and school supplies for the kids. There are also many animal rescue organizations which are always looking for help caring for animals that have been abandoned or rescued from the streets.

If you're looking for other expats to hang out with, try joining a Facebook group specific to your area and attend events or meet-ups created just for such activities.

In many of the Andean mountain cities and towns, you can spend time exploring historic buildings, visit museums, enjoy live music, exercise at a local park, hike in the nearby mountains, or join in one of the many local festivals. Also, don't forget to check for thermal hot springs and spas. The many active volcanoes in the Andes create hot springs throughout the region.

Beach cities and towns will be slightly more laid-back in style, providing beautiful beaches for swimming, walking, or fishing. If you like more active watersports, many beaches are great for activities like surfing and parasailing.

Towns and villages in the rain forest are great for adventure sports like zip-lining, rafting or tubing down a river. There are also many places to hike or observe wildlife. As one of the most biodiverse places on the planet you will be sure to see many plants and animals found nowhere else, no matter where you are in Ecuador!
