September 2025 Edition | Your Monthly Guide to Expat Life in Ecuador

Welcome to our September newsletter! This month, we're diving into the real costs of living in Ecuador for 2025, plus we're excited to announce our Crash Course tour dates for 2026. Whether you're planning a move or just curious about life here, we've got you covered.
Ecuador Cost of Living Guide: 2025 Edition

Wondering what your monthly expenses might look like in Ecuador? Our research shows that the average monthly cost for a comfortable lifestyle ranges from $1,000-$2,500 for singles and $1,200-$3,200 for couples. This significant variation comes down to your location, personal choices, and preferred lifestyle.
Housing: In the mountain regions, you can expect to pay $400-800/month for a modern furnished 1 or 2-bedroom apartment in expat-friendly areas. If you are living in one of the larger coastal cities, you can expect to pay $800-2000/month for a well-appointed furnished apartment. Unfurnished apartments will be less expensive, but require you to provide the kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer in addition to all other furniture
Groceries: $150-300/month, with significant savings when shopping at local mercados instead of supermarkets
Utilities: $80-150/month including electricity, water, propane, cell phone, and high-speed internet
Healthcare: $80-160/month, per person for quality private insurance for those under 65
Entertainment: $150-400/month depending on dining habits and activities
Transportation: $10-35/month depending on the mode of transportation and frequency
Your budget can stretch further in smaller towns like Cotacachi or Vilcabamba, while Cuenca and Quito typically command higher prices. Many of our expat community members report living comfortably while spending significantly less than they did in North America or Europe.
Smart Money Tips for Ecuador Living

Looking to optimize your Ecuador budget? Here are our top recommendations from long-term expats:
Rent for at least 6-12 months before buying property to find your ideal location
Shop at local mercados for produce (often much cheaper than supermarkets)
Download local transportation apps on your phone for the buses and taxis to help you get around
Consider a part-time housekeeper ($15-20 per visit) for convenience and supporting local employment
Join expat Facebook groups to find the best deals on furniture and appliances
